Q

Error message: A security upgrade is required to perform the operation on this media file.

This appears in Overdrive Media console when I try to download a file. Does this mean I need to change my internet security settings?

Answer

Thanks for the question. If you are using OverDrive Media Console for Windows, your Windows Media player may need a security upgrade to play DRM-protected titles. This isn't a change to your Internet security settings, just an update to your Windows Media Player. Follow the instructions in the Overdrive Media Console to complete the upgrade and you will no longer see this message.

If you want to perform the upgrade manually, here are the instructions Overdrive provides:

If you have Windows Media Player 11 (or newer)…

  1. While connected to the Internet, open OverDrive Media Console.
  2. Go to Tools > Windows Media Player Security Upgrade.
A dialog box is displayed, notifying you that Windows Media Player requires a security upgrade.
  3. Click 'OK'.
Windows Media Player opens, and the 'Windows Media Player' dialog box is displayed.
  4. Click 'Upgrade'.
Windows Media Player indicates that it is 'Connecting to server…'. Once connected, the security component is downloaded and installed. Windows Media Player indicates that the security component was upgraded successfully.
  5. Click the 'Close' button in the 'Windows Media Player' dialog box.
The 'Media Usage Rights Acquisition' dialog box is displayed.
  6. Click the 'Play' button.
Windows Media Player plays a brief file, confirming you have completed the upgrade.

If you have Windows Media Player 9 or 10…

  4. Click 'Yes' to perform the upgrade.
The 'License Acquisition' dialog box is displayed.
  5. Click the 'Play' button.
Windows Media Player plays a brief file, confirming you have completed the upgrade.

Hope this helps. Please let us know if you have any additional difficulties.

  1. This doesn't help. If you have a computer and you want to use the overdrive media console on it, the security upgrade feature in overdrive will not work for you. Search the internet, or if you don't want to lose your mind searching hundreds of websites for the right answer, give up and forget about trying to download audiobooks through your local libaray system.

  2. I'm sorry it isn't working for you. Many people who got this error were able to update Windows Media Player and use our audiobooks.
